Pastor Jeremy Duprey Bio

Pastor Jeremy Duprey is an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), with over 20 years of ministry service. He is currently serving at Community Lutheran Church in Hill City, South Dakota. Since arriving at Community Lutheran in 2017, Pastor Jeremy has faithfully led the congregation rooted in hospitality, generosity, and a deep commitment to living out God’s love in the Black Hills community and beyond. He hopes to bring this same spirit and commitment to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Pastor Jeremy understands his vocation as flowing first from his identity as a beloved child of God. His ministry is shaped by an awareness of God’s active presence in everyday life. Through prayer, worship, Scripture, the sacraments, and a commitment to justice and community, he seeks to follow Jesus and invite others into a deeper experience of God’s grace.
Pastor Jeremy has over nine years of experience as an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament, leading worship and proclaiming the Gospel. His preaching blends thoughtful reflection, openness to the Spirit’s leading, and conversational engagement with the congregation. He values worship as a space where people can encounter the risen Christ in meaningful and transformative ways.
Pastoral care and spiritual formation are central to Pastor Jeremy’s ministry. He brings decades of experience accompanying individuals and families through seasons of joy, grief, illness, and crisis, offering a compassionate presence grounded in prayerful listening. He has particular experience walking with communities through tragedy and loss, trusting the Holy Spirit to work through silence, ritual, and simple presence as much as through words.
Pastor Jeremy is especially passionate about nurturing community through shared practices, including music and prayer. A trained facilitator with Music That Makes Community, he incorporates learnable, participatory singing into worship, small groups, and public gatherings as a way to foster connection and belonging. He also practices and teaches contemplative prayer—particularly Centering Prayer—as a pathway to spiritual healing, growth, and freedom from ego-driven living.
An advocate for lifelong learning and holistic well-being, Pastor Jeremy is a Level 1 certified ELCA coach and has coached individuals for nearly six years. He values active listening as a foundational pastoral skill and is energized by intergenerational faith formation, believing faith deepens most richly when people of different ages learn and grow together.
Pastor Jeremy earned his Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. Before ordained ministry, he served for over eleven years in Episcopal and Lutheran youth and family ministry roles, experiences that continue to inform his pastoral leadership.
Outside of formal ministry, Pastor Jeremy prioritizes family, prayer, and healthy rhythms of rest. His spiritual practices include daily prayer, Sabbath-keeping, periodic silent retreat, and long-term renewal through sabbatical, shaping both his leadership style and the example he hopes to offer others. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, watching baseball and soccer, and playing ultimate frisbee.
Together with the congregations he serves, Pastor Jeremy remains deeply committed to the wider ministry of the ELCA, actively supporting synodical partnerships, campus ministry, and shared ministries such as the Reconciliation Center on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He believes the church is called not to dwell in the past, but to discern where the Spirit is moving today and to join in God’s work of love and transformation in the world.
